The project “Sustainable digital transformation: desktop virtualization (VDI)” implemented at the Polytechnic University of Madrid by Virtual Cable, Lanmedia, NetApp, and Lenovo has been a finalist in the Smart Buildings Category of the enerTIC Awards 2022. The awards ceremony will take place on December 15 in the Assembly Hall of the Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence.This project has reached the final thanks to its demonstrable good performance and the notable improvement in terms of sustainability. Víctor Robles Forcada, Vice-rector for Strategy and Digital Transformation at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, has expressed his pride that the project he has directed has reached the final of such outstanding awards.
The vice-rector explains that“the UPM virtual desktop provides students with access at any time, place, and device to everything they need to do their teaching practices. This service is delivered thanks to UDS Enterprise technology on Lenovo and NetApp infrastructure. It has been carried out with the collaboration of Lanmedia.”
Thanks to “UPMdesktop”, more than 38,000 students and close to 1,000 workers can access all UPM software, from any location and at any time, without installing anything on their devices and with total security guarantees. This VDI infrastructure has facilitated the replacement of PCs in classrooms and workstations with miniPCs working as thin clients with a maximum consumption of 18Wh. For each piece of equipment replaced, consumption has been reduced by about 62Wh. The extracted data shows that each virtualized workstation reduces consumption by approximately 58.7Wh, achieving energy savings of 73.37%.
In addition to reducing consumption, the UDS Enterprise VDI infrastructure has managed to minimize UPM’s CO2 emissions, thanks to the transfer of the computing power of the workstations to the virtualization platform. Virtual Cable has helped lower the University’s carbon footprint; “UPMdesktop” is a sustainable and resilient platform, ready to take advantage of 5G. In addition, due to 24×7 access from any place and device, the mobility of workers and students is diminished, reducing travel and thus reducing more CO2 emissions.
